Kuala Lumpur, May 26: Gavin Green Kyle Green regained his Kurnia-Saujana Amateur Championship crown in dramatic fashion when he saw off the challenge of Australian Ryan Peake in a play-off at the Saujana Golf & Country Club.
The 2009 champion looked to have sown up the title in regulation until Peake snuck in consecutive birdies on the final two holes to post a 71 while Gavin played an even-par round. Singapore’s Jerome Ng leapfrogged Filipino Jobim Carlos to third place on 218 with an even-par round himself while the 17-year-old Carlos struggled on the final day with a 75 to take sole fourth.
In the sudden death played on the par-5 18th,both Green and Peake ended up in the fairway bunker with their tee-shots but while the local was able to recover back into the fairway, the 16-year-old from Perth sent his second shot into the trees and heavy rough about 140 yards from the pin. Peake found a window among the heavy foliage but overshot the green with his pitch shot into OB.
Green took full advantage of his rival’s misfortune to deftly chip his ball onto the green and enjoyed the luxury of two putts for his second Kurnia-Saujana Amateur crown.
“After I saw Ryan’s ball ending into the trees, I knew I had a good chance. My second shot was in good position on the fairway and when Ryan’s ball went OB, I knew the tournament was mine,” said the 17-year-old.
