Ipoh, Perak; June 24: Gavin Kyle Green got off to a great start during the first round of the Perak Amateur Open today.
The 17-year-old Green carded a round of three-under 69 to open up a three-shot advantage over a quartet of players led by Mohd Afif Mohd Razif and Kedahan Mohd Azry Asyraf Noor Azam at the Meru Valley Golf & Country Club.
“I was able to set a good pace for the rest of the tournament,” shared Gavin to MGA Online. “If I win this tournament, it will be a great boost for me ahead of my upcoming US stint,” he added.
In the ladies division, national player Vivienne Chin shot a splendid four-under 68 for a nine-shot lead over Singapore’s Amelia Yong and Sheryl Villancencio of the Philippines, despite playing her first competitive tournament after taking a short break to focus on her studies ahead of the SPM examinations later this year.
“The course set up is good, so I was able to get in a good rhythm. “I was playing well, and I was able to continue to play well on the back nine,” said the Sabahan to MGA Online.
A total of 76 amateurs are in the field for the 58th edition of the event this week.
