Kuala Lumpur: The race for a guaranteed passage into the Asian Tour next year heats up with the culmination of the Asian Development Tour  at this week’s PGM-MIDF-KLGCC Classic.

The RM200,000 event organised by the  Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) will see a field of 144 golfers, including 68 of Asia’s up-and-coming golfers vying for honours at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club from September 22 to 25.

Headlining the event are the trio of Jonathan Moore, Chiang Chen-chih and Kao Shang-hung, who will hope to maintain their top three placing in the ADT’s Order of Merit and in the process, earn elusive 2012 Asian Tour cards.

Moore, the former US Walker Cup hero in 2007, will be eyeing a second ADT victory in the event  after winning the PGM-ADT-CCM Impian Classic in Malaysia in May. The  25-year-old followed up on that performance with a tied fourth placing at the Ballantine’s Taiwan Championship and a tied second at the Aboitiz Invitational in the Philippines last month as he attempts to successfully make the grade on the Asian Tour.

Led by the in-form Shaaban Hussin, who won the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia National Qualifier last week for the second year running, the local brigade will include PGM Tour’s top order including Md Rashid Ismail;  two-time PGM Tour winner Nicholas Fung; S. Sivachandhran, who won the Melaka Classic on the Asian Development Tour in June; highly rated Haziq Hamizan and Sukree Othman, who finished in tied fifth place at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters on the Asian Tour in July.

Coming forth as the title sponsor of the event, which is also the thirteenth leg of burgeoning Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour, is diversified financial services provider Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF). The sponsorship cheque presentation ceremony on September 15 was graced by PGM chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid and MIDF chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Mahmood Taib.

It was also announced during the ceremony that Golf Malaysia Magazine has been appointed as the official media partner of the PGM Tour.
