Kuala Lumpur: National number five Low Khai Jei shared the lead with two others after the opening round of the 27th MPI-Saujana Amateur Championship 2014 on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old rounded the Saujana Golf & Country Club’s Bunga Raya course with a flawless three-under 69 – a score matched by Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Chieh-Po Lee of Chinese Taipei.

Australian Jarryd Felton was in lone fourth, trading four birdies against two bogeys for a 70 while Singapore’s Jerome Ng and Justin Quiban were a further stroke adrift.

Opening with a birdie at the first, Khai Jei notched up further birdies on the sixth and seventh to wrap up his round bogey-free.

“I was hitting it very good and made a lot of greens in regulation. I missed a few short birdie putts but sank some long ones – so it evened out in the end.I must admit that I have a bit of homeground advantage!” said Khai Jei, the reigning club champion at Saujana.

South East Asia (SEA) Games gold medallist Boonma nailed five birdies, only to be offset by a couple of bogeys. “My game was not bad. I was spraying my drives a little bit but my putting saved the day,” said the Thai.
