Shah Alam: The magnificent new trophy for the EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM was unveiled on Tuesday, a week before the inaugural Asia vs Europe team matchplay event tees off at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club.
Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid was joined by DRB-HICOM chief operating officer Datuk Mohamed Razeek Md Hussain and EurAsia Golf senior director Charlie Tingey as they revealed the trophy as well as 24k gold and 925 silver medallions, which will be awarded to the champion and runner-up teams.
The specially-commissioned 925 sterling silver trophy was the brainchild of Ahmad Sarji himself and produced by renowned master craftsman Hassan Mat Jusoh of Kelantan Silver.
Weighing over six kilogrammes and standing at 18 inches tall, it took four expert craftsmen over two months to hand-fashion the stunning trophy, which features the coat of arms of Malaysia.
As he unveiled the trophy, Tun Ahmad Sarji commented: “The EurAsia Cup is a very important new event in the world of golf, so we wanted to have a suitably impressive new trophy for the players to compete for.
“It was also very important for us to have something that shows off Malaysia’s wonderful craftsmanship and reflects the role Malaysia has played in the beginning of the EurAsia Cup. I very much hope that come next Saturday, it is Team Asia that is being engraved on trophy as inaugural winners.”
