Villegas confirms CIMB debut, Singh to make ‘home’ return

Kuala Lumpur: Charismatic PGA Tour star Camilo Villegas has confirmed his participation at this year’s CIMB Asia Pacific Classic, Malaysia, to be staged at The MINES Resort & Golf Club from October 27-30.

Nicknamed Spiderman for his unique way of reading the greens , the three-time PGA Tour winner will arrive in Kuala Lumpur with the spotlight focused squarely on him as one of the crowd favourites.

Tournament title sponsor CIMB also confirmed the appearance of two-time Malaysian Open champion Vijay Singh and former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Brandt Snedeker alongside former Major winners Angel Cabrera and Stewart Cink and hugely popular reigning champion Ben Crane

A three-time Major winner, Singh will be warmly welcomed by local golf fans with his deep roots in Malaysia and will look to claim his first title of the season on back of five top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour.

Snedeker will be eager to end his season on a high after claiming  The Heritage title in April, beating Luke Donald in a sudden-death playoff. More recently, the 31-year-old American posted two third-place finishes at The Barclays and The Deutsche Bank Championship  in the season-ending FedEx Cup Playoffs.

CIMB Group’s Head of Marketing and Communications Effendy Shahul Hamid said that they were pleased with the momentum going into the tournament at the end of October. “Things are on track and shaping up nicely for the tournament at the end of October. The inclusion of Camilo Villegas, Brandt Snedeker and Vijay Singh speaks volumes for the profile of the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic. We look forward to hosting the highest quality field to play in the ASEAN region in 2011.”

Featuring a field of 48 player – 30 players from the PGA TOUR, 10 from the Asian Tour, two Malaysians and the remainder being sponsors’ exemptions, the champion will walk away with US$1.3 million in the US$6.1 million tournament.
