Malaysia eye maiden glory in Lion City Cup

Malaysia`s Lion City Cuppers

Hong Kong: A sparkling third round display by youngsters Jeremiah Kim and Low Khai Jei saw Malaysia move into position to challenge favourites Thailand for the fifth edition of the Lion City Cup held in conjunction with the 51st South East Asian Amateur Team Golf Championship.

Jeremiah improved to tied fourth in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 218 after carding a solid two-under 68 at the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club. Khai Jei looked set to push overnight leader  Chanchok Dejpiratanammongkol of Thailand to the wire in tomorrow’s final round after narrowing the gap at the top to just one stroke with a solid round of 70 today, highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 15th.

Malaysia have combined for a three-day total of 653, four strokes behind Thailand with Indonesia nine strokes behind in third place.

The national Santi Cuppers were also confident of top-three finishes after 17-year-old Vivienne Chin stayed on course for the individual title with a third round score of 69. Totalling 208 over three rounds, Vivienne lies four shots off the pace of leader Pinrath Loomboonruang of Thailand (68), with Filipina Dottie Ardina in second on 205.

Improved displays by Isza Fariza Ismail and Nur Durriyah Damian saw Malaysia improve to third place in the Santi Cup standings on 654 with hosts Hong Kong the nearest rival for the last podium place on 659.

Abel Tam was Malaysia’s best performer in the Putra Cup today, carding a round of one-under 69. The men’s individual title race remains wide open with only six strokes dividing the top ten players in the field. Mohd Hisyam Abdul Majid is five adrift of 54-hole leader Hak Shun Yat, who saw his advantage dissipate after a dismal round of 73 today.

A low-scoring day by Causeway neighbours Singapore saw them leap to the top of the leaderboard on 630, two ahead of the hosts, who are still in the hunt for only their second win in the tournament’s 51-year history.
