Shah Alam: Attractive golf scholarships worth RM100,000 apiece will be on offer for the overall boys and girls champions during the 8th edition of the TSM Golf Challenge later this year.

Returning to the familiar settings of Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam for the third consecutive year, the prestigious junior amateur meet from December 5-8 has also secured the support of national automaker Proton Holdings Berhad as the title sponsor.

In addition to the scholarships and other attractive prizes worth over RM500,000, the winners will also be invited to participate in events sanctioned by the Asian Tour in Malaysia, notably the Maybank Malaysian Open and the Iskandar Johor Open, under the auspices of the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) and the Asian Tour.

Deputy Prime Minister and tournament founder Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin witnessed the signing of a memorandum of agreement between event promoter Tan Sri Muhyiddin Golf Charity (TSMGC), Proton Holdings Berhad, MGA and Asian Tour International Ltd on September 17.

TSMGC president Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas also announced that for the first time, junior amateur champions from the ASEAN region will be invited to further spice up the challenge at the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) counting event.

“The TSM Golf Challenge has traditionally attracted the nation’s top junior amateurs and we feel that by inviting the junior amateur champions from our ASEAN neighbours, we can further elevate the standard of this tournament and and provide a competitive platform for our domestic juniors to test their skills against the region’s best.”

MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said the golf scholarships would allow the winners to compete in amateur meets in the Asian region as well as cover overseas training stints.

Also present was Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who handed over his ministry’s contribution of RM200,000 for the tournament.

“I understand that the TSM Golf Challenge’s tagline is “In Search of the Malaysian Tiger”and aptly, we want to see more raw junior talents being produced through this tournament before we can shine them up for international assignments,” he noted.
