Kangar (PERLIS): Johor’s Loy Hee Ying produced the upset of the tournament as she came back from behind to beat her more fancied opponents and claim the ladies’ individual gold at the 17th Malaysian Games (SUKMA) on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old Kulai lass ended her campaign at Putra Golf Club with a solid one-under 71 to coast to a convincing four-stroke victory over Melaka’s Nur Eliana Ariffin, who returned with an even-par 72.
National amateur Nur Durriyah Damian (75) of Terengganu pipped team mate and overnight leader Genevieve Ling I-Rynn (76) to the bronze on countback after they both had totalled 227.
The duo, however, combined superbly with Qistina Balqis Azhar to savour gold in the ladies team event, totalling 454 to finish ten shots ahead of runner-ups Johor to clinch the Hanelang‘s first golfing gold as the Federal Territories picked up the bronze with a 466 overall.
Meanwhile, there was little surprise in the men’s division as Perakian Low Khai Jei grabbed an early birthday present for himself by cruising to a wire-to-wire win in the individual contest.
Despite returning with a two-over 74, Khai Jei, who turns 18 next week, totalled one-over 217 to secure Perak’s maiden gold in the sport ahead of 2010 champion Chan Tuck Soon of the Federal Territories, who leapt into second place with a 74 of his own. Penang youngster Bryan Teoh Wiyang closed with four-over 76 to settle a further shot back in third for the bronze.
But there was to be no double celebration for Perak as the Federal Territories, comprising of Tuck Soon, Chang Ervin, Danial Hj Mohd Sidek and Sazanur Iman Salenin, grinded out a closing best-of-three score of 227 to out-run the joint overnight leaders to the finishing line with a 681 total to win by four strokes. Johor were seven strokes off the lead to settle for the bronze.
