Kangar (PERLIS): Perak and Terengganu are on the cusp of claiming their maiden golfing golds at the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) after a fiercely contested second round of the golf championship on Monday.

Low Khai Jei led the way for the Silver State with a round of one-under 71 to pull three shots clear of joint overnight leader Hiew Alvin (74) of Johor with a two-day total of 143 in the men’s individual event. Penang youngster Bryan Teoh Wiyang remained in contention, returning with a 74 to remain within three strokes of the lead.

With the supporting cast of Lucas Yee (77) and Galven Kendall Green (78) once again providing able support at the demanding Kelab Golf Putra, Perak leapt into a share of the lead on 454 alongside the Federal Territories – who garnered the day’s best of 225, courtesy of Chan Tuck Soon (72), Danial Hj Mohd Sidek (76) and Chang Ervin (77).

In the ladies’ division,  Boise State freshman Genevieve Ling I-Rynn carded a 73 to move one clear of Johor competitor Loy Hee Ying (74) on six-over 150.

Ling’s team-mate and national number one Nur Durriyah Damian is a further shot behind after a 74 of her own – ensuring that the Terengganu Hanelang will go into the final day of competition tomorrow with a nine-shot advantage over Johor in the ladies’ team contest.

In a dramatic twist to the toasty second round proceedings, Sabah’s Vivienne Chin was stretched out after losing consciousness on the 16th hole while Kedah’s Mohd Azren Noor Azam of Kedah was twice disqualified after submitting an incorrect scores on both days of competition.
