KUALA LUMPUR: Professional Michelle Koh hopes to overcome a mental blip as she continues her quest to secure playing rights on the LPGA next year.
The 24-year-old Kuantan native left for the United States immediately after her lacklustre campaign at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia and wants to get her season back on track as she tees off the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament later today (1:20am Friday local time).
Just one of 197 hopefuls in the field this week, Koh understands that she needs to bring her A-game to the long and windy Plantation Golf & Country Club.
“It has been a hectic October so far but despite feeling a little bit off after that disappointing week, I arrived as early I could and got down to working on something solid to bring to the tournament,” said Koh from Florida, where she is joined in the field by compatriot and Symetra Tour regular Jean Chua.
“It would have been nice to have got some momentum ahead of the qualifier but my recent form has been erratic. I just need to bring it all together, keep a positive outlook and crucially, convert as many chances that comes my way this week.”
Koh claimed her professional breakthrough title at the Shanghai Ladies Classic in June, following an impressive runner-up finish at the Srixon XXIO Ladies Open in May.
The former Campbell University stand-out is aiming to keep it simple, with her eyes focused on finishing inside the top-80 and ties mark, which will see her advance to December’s final stage shootout.
“My expectations are low and it’s going to be the standard one-shot-at-a-time game plan. Top-80 is definitely make-able and hopefully, it will be a fun week,” she noted.
Koh and Chua will look to join Kelly Tan, who did just enough to keep her Tour card for 2016 by staying inside the top-125 on the Official Money List this season.
