Rawang, SELANGOR: Templer Park Country Club joined forces with other golf industry stakeholders to organise a charity golf game in benefit of professional Murthy Somasundaram on Wednesday.
The Home Start Charity Golf 2017 was aimed at raising funds to help the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) touring professional rebuild his home in Banting, Selangor which was razed by a pre-dawn fire on October 6.
The fund-raiser drew a field of 60 participants, with many other supporters and well-wishers contributing to the charity pool despite not playing.
With Templer Park Country Club waiving off the green fees, a sum of RM41,000 was collected from the tournament entry fee as well as an auction of golf items, donated by Murthy’s sponsors Srixon Sports Asia and Transview Golf Malaysia as well as Prestige Golf.
Murthy was moved to tears by the exceptional generosity displayed by his fellow compatriots in the industry.
“I am deeply touched by the support shown by my friends in the golfing industry and I am truly indebted to them. The construction work on my new house has started and this money will definitely come in handy.
“I lost everything in the fire and was pretty clueless about how I was going to move forward until Manibalan Kutty (the general manager and director of Templer Park Country Club) stepped in to host this charity do,” said the 46-year-old veteran, who played for Malaysia between 1990-1996.
