KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Zubair Mohd Firdaus went one better on Friday as he sealed a sensational seven-shot victory to clinch the overall boys’ title at the Himbara World Junior Golf Championship.

The 16-year-old Hills International College student put in a great all-round performance, as he totalled two-over 290 on the back of rounds of 69, 75, 75 and 71 at the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) course of Damai Indah Golf in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Zubair, who won the boys’ under 16 division last year, built on his solid opening effort of three-under 69 to secure a wire-to-wire victory over Singapore’s Andre Chong Wei Zer.

“I struggled with my putting mid-way through the tournament but really glad to finish strongly and lift this title. I’m continously improving as a player and winning here for the second year running is testament to that.

“I kept a simple game plan, putting the ball in play and to be honest, I’m pleasantly surprised with the winning margin,” said Zubair, who is expected to represent Terengganu at the 19th Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in Perak later this year.

Johor’s Nor Harith Nor Hadi finished in sole 16th on 312 (83-78-75-76) while national player Adam Arif Madzri came in 22nd on 315 (75-79-85-76).

In the girls division, another Malaysian representative – Natasha Andrea Oon settled for ninth placing, with a 54-hole total of six-over 222 (75-73-74). Thailand’s Phannarai Meesom-us clinched the championship with a five-under 211 total.

Also claiming a podium finish for Malaysia was Jayden Ng Wen Jiat – the MYFutures Junior Tour standout taking the bronze on 18-over 234 in the boys’ 11-12 division.
