Stocky Tuck Soon steers Malaysia ahead

Singapore, June 5: Chan Tuck Soon brought cheers to the Malaysian camp today after steering himself to a three-shot lead at the end of round three of the golf championship of the 3rd ASEAN Schools Games.

With halfway leader Kwanchai Kongtavee struggling to a seven-over-par 79, Chan shot a solid round of two-under 72 to leapfrog the Thai golfer to the top with a three-day total of even-par 216 at the Seletar Country Club. Indonesia’s Aditya Novianto and local hope Joshua Ho took a share of third on  220. Two shots adrift of the duo was Jeremiah Kim, who managed a 74 today.

Chan’s exploits today saw Malaysia (892) take a narrow one-shot lead over early pacesetters Thailand (893) in the boys’ team event. Singapore lie third on 905 with Indonesia a close fourth on 908.

Malaysia remain within touch of the girls’ team crown, lying four shots behind leaders Thailand (681) in the girls’ team standings with Singapore a further five shots behind. Singapore’s Jennifer Yan Jing overtook 36-hole leader Ika Woro Palupi of Indonesia with a 70 today while Palupi recorded a poor 81. Yan’s total of 219 sees her taking a five-stroke advantage into the final round tomorrow.

Vivienne Chin remained the best placed Malaysian in the girls’ division, carding a 75 today to stay fourth on 226.
