Johor Bahru: Daniel Chopra will look to go one better this time around when he tees off at the US$2 million Iskandar Johor Open next week.
Chopra, who losed by a single stroke to winner Joost Luiten last year at Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club, confirmed his return alongside the likes of John Daly and Kevin Na, for what is expected to be an exciting race to claim the final trophy of the 2012 Asian Tour schedule.
“I was disappointed not to walk away with the winner’s trophy last year at Horizon Hills so I would love to make up for it this year and finish my season on a fantastic high. It’s a challenging course so hopefully I can use my past experiences in Johor to get into contention from day one,” said Chopra, who is an experienced competitor in Malaysia and the region having won the Johor Open back in 1993.
Closer to home, the Asian Tour top players will also be out in force with standout Thaworn Wiratchant looking to cement his second Asian Tour Order of Merit title with his third victory of the season.
“I’m beginning to believe that I have a good chance of winning the title for the second time. I’m feeling very confident about my game and this has been reflected in my results this year. I look forward to end the year on a winning note,” shared Thaworn, who is enjoying a rich vein of form.
India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar is also looking to push himself further up the money list with a late surge of top results and earnings and the fourth-ranked player will be looking to add to his two titles already captured this season.
The home supporters will have plenty of local talent to follow around the fairways with at least ten Malaysian players making the line-up. Danny Chia, Shaaban Hussin, Sukree Othman, S. Sivachandhran and Ben Leong earned their starts via their Asian tour placings while three others – Khor Kheng Hwai, R. Nachimuthu and Jeremiah Kim topped the national qualifier held on November 26.
Three amateurs – Johor Amateur Open winner Abel Tam and his fellow nationals Gavin Kyle Green and Low Khai Jei – will complete the 120-player field.
