Senai: Selangor began their title defence at the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) National Golf Championship in the best possible way with their juniors leading in three of the six individual categories contested.
Amir Nazrin Jailani set the pace on the opening day of the championship at Palm Resort Golf & Country Club, carding an even-par 72 to lead Malacca’s Mohd Zul Helmi Ramle by three strokes in the boys’ under-18 category.
The reigning national junior champion was three-under after a strong first nine but dropped three bogeys on the inward stretch to nonetheless get his campaign off to a great start.
“I’m not really pleased because I started really well with four birdies and a bogey on the first nine but my approach shots on the back nine were in a little wayward and I lost a bit of the early momentum. However, I can be happy with the solid advantage after a tough scoring day,” noted the 16-year-old.
“We (Selangor) have a strong team here but we will have to be at our best this week as all the other states are hoping to end our winning run in the championship, so we came here prepared and we hope to remain as competitive as possible.”
Also leading for Selangor are Siti Zulaikhaa Shaari (76), who holds a three-stroke advantage of her own in the girls’ under-15 category and Feirish Nor Feizal Nor, who notched a nine-over 81 for a two-shot advantage over team mate Marcus Lim Pang Chuen.
