Titleholders start 2017 season on positive note

Bangi [SELANGOR]: Yong Fatt Hoe and Foong Zi Yu continued from where they had left off by winning their respective divisions at the season-opening Danau Junior Championship presented by KRUKM on February 26.

With the tournament shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather, Yong, the reigning Ali Kadir Memorial Trophy winner on the MYFutures Junior Tour, carded a solid two-over 74 to finish three strokes clear of Muhammad Firdaus Kassim in the boys’ blue division.

Tengku Muhammad Muzaffar Tengku Masly, who had moved up a division this year, claimed an impressive bronze finish with an effort of 78 at the demanding Danau Golf Club.

In the girls’ red division, defending Founders Bowl champion Foong returned with a round of 86 to post an impressive 10-shot victory over Zarith Sofia Haji Mohd Sidek. Perak’s Lekisha Sasitharan took third place with a score of 98.

The boys’ and girls white divisions provided the drama for the over-subscribed tournament with both categories witnessing three-way play-offs to determine the winners respectively.

In the boys’ contest, Ezmeer Rezza Merican Roslan Merican parred the second extra hole to edge Isaac To and Putra Huzaireil Khan Hussein in a pulsating contest after the trio had tied with matching 81s.

Meanwhile, Liyana Durisic beat archrival and Lim Siew Ai Salver holder Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser with a birdie on the second shootout hole. Megan Lee Zehui, who had matched the duo with a regulation 82, fell out of the contest on the first extra hole to settle for third.

Danau Golf Club once again underlined his commitment to junior golf by playing host to the opening event on the MYFutures Junior Tour with Kelab Rekreasi Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (KRUKM) covering the entry costs for the club’s top ten junior golfers.

In his welcome address at the prize presentation, Danau Golf Club vice-president Professor Dato’ Mazlin Mokhtar noted that club hopes to continue as the flourishing junior tour’s annual curtain raiser.

“This is the inaugural edition of the Danau Junior Championship and we are delighted to have co-organised this tournament with the MYFutures Junior Tour. It is a great platform for our club’s budding talents to test their mettle against peers from around the country and we have witnessed that today with two dramatic play-offs. I hope this collaboration continues in the coming years and we like see Danau Golf Club playing an important part in the success of this Tour,” he said.

The 2017 season is jointly sponsored by Haval Malaysia, Koh & I (M) Trading Sdn Bhd and FarFrontier Energy Services together with the founding partners of the Tour namely Titleist, Templer Park Country Club and The ClubHouse.

Dubbed the Road to Templer Park, the MyFutures Junior Tour 2017 will comprise of six preliminary legs leading to a grand final, aptly named the Tournament of Champions at the pristine Templer Park Country Club in August.
